I find the vision applied to this project to be very clear and precise, transforming a historic site into a contemporary initiative. It preserves the values of the past while adding a touch of the future. In China, such transformations have been taking place for several years, and some of them are particularly interesting to discover and understand.
The Weishan Chongzheng Academy Bookstore of Librairie Avant-Garde, located in the ancient city of Weishan in Yunnan Province, is an extensive project by Trace Architecture Office (TAO).
Weishan, with a history of over 600 years, has a preserved urban layout dating back to China’s Ming and Qing dynasties.
In 2021, the task was to repair and renovate this historic academy, transforming it into a multi-purpose bookstore that also serves as an exhibition space, small theater, cafe, cultural innovation center, public art installation, and open market.
The design revives the Academy’s former wealth and vitality, creating a new lifestyle destination that encourages public participation and contributes to the revitalization of the Old Town.
