In the last ten years, at least, there has been a significant evolution in terms of innovation in the world of wineries. I know our region of South Tyrol very well, and I can assure you that wine and architecture are often expressed here at the highest level.
Since the region’s wines began to captivate enthusiasts around the world, many estates and wineries have undergone a profound transformation. In some cases, they have moved from historic structures to spaces that incorporate modern accents within ancient walls, while in others they have embraced cutting-edge architectural projects, also from a technological perspective.
The luminous cube that seems to rise majestically from the hillside is the headquarters of the Nuova Cantina di Bolzano, a symmetrical structure – a low-energy or climate-friendly house for wine – an imposing 20,000-square-meter building with its production facilities.
The cube is actually just the “tip of the iceberg”; it is a landmark, the symbol of Bolzano’s viticulture, but it is only the visible part of the building, which is 95% underground, reaching a depth of 40 meters, as the entire production process is carried out by gravity.
Designed by the Dell’Agnolo-Kelderer studio, it is the first winery in Italy to receive the CasaClima Wine label, which certifies the building’s energy efficiency and sustainability requirements, as well as an environmentally and resource-friendly production process.
