Searching for new hotels that offer a truly special or unique experience has always been one of my favorite exercises. The cornerstone that encapsulates a set of concepts and values in a project is innovation in its vision and approach.
MAST has unveiled plans to transform the abandoned Portuguese salt production area into a new hotel concept with a cluster of stilt houses floating above the shallow lagoons.
Set in a landscape of Atlantic pine forests and rice fields, the ‘salina’ has a history of salt production dating back at least three hundred years, but was abandoned in the early 2000s and has since become overgrown with saltbush and other halophytic vegetation.
Central to the project are the wooden stilt houses, small huts inspired by the traditional fishermen’s huts and jetties that dot the lagoons and rivers of southern Portugal.
