Tasked with transforming a Soviet-era apartment building in the capital of Kazakhstan into a modern café, bakery and restaurant, the women-led architecture firm NAAW Studio decided to create a playful project that would transform the building into a Scandinavian-inspired restaurant while respecting the original structure.
In keeping with the Swedish tradition of stopping for a cup of good coffee and a sweet treat, FIKA’s interior design leans toward a modern style, seamlessly incorporating the remaining traces of the property’s Stalinist architectural heritage as well as contemporary details inspired by the atmosphere of Almaty.
