Shanghai is poised to strengthen its position among the world’s leading capitals with the upcoming Shanghai Grand Opera House, a cornerstone project of the 13th National Five-Year Plan aimed at enhancing the city’s cultural role and global influence. Following an international design competition, Snøhetta has been commissioned to design this landmark cultural venue.
Located in the Expo Houtan district along a bend of the Huangpu River, the Opera House is part of an ecologically driven, low-emission urban development that aligns with Shanghai’s sustainable growth strategies. The building’s fluid, dynamic form—reminiscent of an opening fan—serves both aesthetic and functional purposes, integrating artists, audiences, and the surrounding urban landscape.
The spiraling roof design creates strategic sightlines connecting the river to the city, establishing the Opera House as a highly recognizable and symbolic landmark.
