I recently discovered Kengo Kuma’s latest niche museum, a world-class institution in Yixing, known as the “capital of ceramics” in China. This city near Shanghai, famous for its deep-rooted ceramic traditions, now boasts a stunning new museum with a ceramic facade designed by the renowned Japanese architect.
Yixing’s legacy as a leading center for ceramics remains strong, and this new museum further solidifies its reputation. Located on the Creative & Cultural Ceramic Avenue, the 2,400-square-meter space is dedicated to showcasing the region’s 7,000-year history of ceramics. Kuma envisioned a design that mimicked the rolling hills of the nearby Shushan Mountains. He worked closely with local artisans to create unique ceramic panels that cover the entire two-story building.
The goal of this museum is clear: to become a vibrant force that integrates ceramic art into everyday life while promoting cultural exchange.
