Halley VI British Antarctic Research Station, designed by Hugh Broughton Architects in collaboration with AECOM for the British Antarctic Survey, represents both an engineering and experiential response to some of the planet’s most inhospitable conditions. Situated on the constantly shifting Brunt Ice Shelf, the station departs from static solutions of the past through eight independent modules mounted on hydraulic legs with skis, allowing the entire structure to be relocated as needed, ensuring safety and operational longevity beyond the constraints imposed by moving ice.
This modular approach not only addresses extreme climatic variables, with temperatures dropping below −50 °C and months of continuous darkness, but also incorporates spatial design that supports human well-being during cycles of isolation and intensive scientific activity.
