This project was brought to my attention by a dear friend from Los Angeles, an expert in mountain hiking but always with a keen eye for details. Being in a location fairly close to Milan, I will soon organize an expedition among enthusiasts of this kind to see exactly what it entails.
It is a very small but highly functional refuge, offering panoramic views of the Italian Alps.
The architecture studio EX designed Pinwheel Shelter, a structure made of prefabricated CLT panels and aluminum cladding in an origami-like shape, situated at 2,850 meters above sea level near the upper Susa valley.
The aim was to create a fully reversible and minimally invasive structure, while also respecting the surrounding environment, conceptually lightweight and capable of being assembled in a few days and easily dismantled.
It’s a project that combines art, landscape, and technology through architecture.
