When I talk about architecture, I often focus on the repurposing of spaces because, from my perspective, these projects have an evolutionary significance and, by definition, embody an innovative approach.
In China, especially in the big cities, there are several of these projects. What is impressive is that they are all on a very large scale, which makes the structures landmarks.
The Danish architecture firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen has transformed a cement factory in Shanghai’s West Bund Art Center into a venue for the performing arts.
Topped by an imposing dome, the factory’s central curved structure has been transformed into a 300-square-meter multipurpose hall for art exhibitions, music concerts, and sporting events.
