Located in the Huadu district of Guangzhou, China, the Sunac Guangzhou Grand Theatre is a newly completed, 2000-seat, purpose-built theater designed by London-based SCA|Steven Chilton Architects.
Known as the birthplace of the ‘Silk Road by the Sea’, Guangzhou has been a major hub for the arts and commerce since the Han Dynasty.
Inspired by both traditional and contemporary artists, the theater’s design is influenced by silk embroidery, the artwork of Zhang Hongfei, and tattoo art.
The excessive decoration is no accident. The Chinese penchant for extravagant architecture, a symbol of their economic prowess, is a genuine requirement that the architects have embraced.
Given that the decorative facade serves no functional purpose and, like silk, exists primarily for visual and tactile pleasure, it becomes clear how this deliberate choice differs from the hyper-functional experiments seen in other parts of the world.
