Architecture is undoubtedly one of the central themes of our century. Personally, I have always had a natural curiosity for projects that go far beyond mere construction. In many cases, it’s a matter of vision, creativity and courage.
We are on Jiming Island in Weihai, and I find that there is a very intriguing underlying concept here – that of balancing horizontality and verticality, ascent and descent, so that the building connects with the earth and the sky through the essential gestures of architecture, bringing people back to nature.
The Trace Architecture Office has positioned a concrete cafe and guesthouse that appear like giant rocks on the edge of a cliff on Jiming Island in Weihai, China.
These structures are integrated into the landscape, with the Cliff Cafe facing the sea and offering a concrete terrace with a panoramic view.
Next to it is the Tower House, a tall and narrow concrete structure that houses a single guesthouse, with rooms that overlap rather than adjoin each other.
The café is a horizontal element that extends to the horizon, while the Tower House is a vertical volume that rises to the sky.
