Many of the projects I write about captivate me because they go beyond their core business missions, driven by vision, innovation, and creativity. They set new benchmarks and inspire their industries.
One such project is Gym Town, designed by MR Studio in Hong Kong’s Central District. Inspired by a futuristic Martian dwelling, it offers an immersive experience far beyond traditional fitness spaces.
The reception and entryway, in warm, earthy orange tones reminiscent of Mars, create an inviting yet otherworldly atmosphere. In contrast, the workout areas use muted black and grey tones to encourage focus and mindfulness.
A dramatic escalator encased in a tunnel-like portal begins the journey, evoking adventure. Undulating walls mimic the molten surfaces of Mars, paying homage to Elon Musk’s vision of Martian colonization with futuristic, tactile materials.
At the center of the space is the reception lounge, featuring a semi-circular brass desk and satellite dish-inspired lamps, reinforcing the space exploration theme. Above, a ceiling light with concentric circles echoes Mars’s cratered terrain and creatively addresses the absence of natural light.
Deeper inside, the locker rooms and studios adopt darker tones, creating an intense and contemplative environment. Every detail, from textures to lighting, blends functionality with imagination, crafting a space that feels both grounded and extraordinary.
