Watching how architecture can merge natural materials with cutting-edge engineering, I was struck by how thoughtful planning transforms both daily experiences and entire cityscapes. In this project, every decision reflects a commitment to sustainability, resilience, and lasting urban value.
Katajanokan Laituri exemplifies the potential of timber construction in a sensitive urban setting. As the first new building along Helsinki’s historic waterfront, it connects the classical rhythm of the shoreline with the surrounding urban fabric. Its layered façade balances openness and protection from maritime weather, creating a presence that subtly shifts with light and season. The project was developed by Anttinen Oiva Architects, whose approach emphasizes both architectural quality and contextual sensitivity.
The building combines office and hotel functions across four floors, featuring a publicly accessible green rooftop and dynamic street-level spaces including a foyer, café, and conference areas. The structural approach ensures long-term flexibility and adaptability. Courtyards and rooftop terraces draw inspiration from northern landscapes, blending architecture with nature.
Sustainability guides every aspect, from material choices to flood protection measures, ensuring minimal climate impact over the building’s lifecycle.
