Observing places of travel, it is clear how airports tend to offer standardized and rarely engaging experiences. For this reason, when I came across a project that overturns this logic by turning waiting time into an opportunity for well-being and a meaningful relationship with space, I recognized an interesting signal for those investing in high-end services.
At the heart of Singapore Changi Airport, a new space redefines pre-flight waiting as an active form of well-being: the Fit&Fun Zone designed by RIOS transforms 400 square meters of terminal into a fluid experience shaped by movement, color, and physical and emotional stimulation. Here, an airport traditionally driven by function welcomes travelers in transit with a proposal that blends playfulness and restoration, moving beyond simple comfort. Different areas invite the body to move, to pause, or to regain energy before boarding, through tools and atmospheres that respond to different states of mind. This sequence of spaces is built on a deep understanding of human needs while traveling and reflects a design approach that integrates research, sensory scenography, and functional design. In a premium market where experience is often the true competitive differentiator, the Fit&Fun Zone shows how investment in experiential design can renew the appeal of a global hub, reinforcing Singapore Changi as a reference point for the future of airport hospitality.
