I was immediately struck by the discovery of the world’s first self-driving golf trolley. From an innovation perspective, I can instantly see the practical applications it could have—both for enhancing players’ experiences and for transforming the sports accessories market.
Botronics has developed iXi, an intelligent golf trolley that functions like a personal caddie. It follows players from hole to hole, provides advice on club selection, and records data to optimize their game.
The prototype, created in collaboration with the design studio Futurewave, uses artificial intelligence to navigate the course autonomously. Cameras and microphones allow control via gestures and voice commands.
With GPS and preloaded maps of over 40,000 golf courses, iXi can either follow the player or move ahead to clear the path. A simple hand gesture is enough for the trolley to move along fairways and paths, stopping to allow the next shot.
A front-facing camera detects when the player takes out the putter, automatically moving the trolley toward the next tee. The device also recommends which club to use, based on the player’s style and typical shot distances.
The integrated display shows distances, par, green details, and a digital scoreboard tracking performance. An AI-powered stereoscopic camera records the swing, provides instant feedback, or allows video sharing with a coach via the iXi app.
The app lets users relive their round on a virtual map, analyze swing footage, and track performance stats—transforming both how players play and train on the course.
