The 81st Street Studio, an interactive learning center for children aged three to eleven, will open in September at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City.
The 3,500-square-foot space, designed by Koko Architecture + Design, will include interactive displays and activities that encourage exploration of the museum’s collection.
The Studio’s mission is to promote creative growth and problem-solving skills by fostering connections between art and science.
Activities will include woodblock carving, drum-making, and learning about the physical properties of materials. There will be a Yamaha musical station and hands-on building opportunities, as well as Met Field Guides for museum and Central Park exploration.
Heidi Holder, the Met’s chair of education, developed the new education initiative in collaboration with the museum’s conservation, scientific research, curatorial, design, digital, and capital projects departments.
