Slovenia is one of those ten places in the world that I would like to visit soon, now also to go see Cukrarna in Ljubljana. A former sugar refinery, built in 1828 and later destroyed by a fire, it subsequently became a tobacco factory, a textile factory, a military barracks, and a shelter for the homeless.
It is an important cultural symbol of the nation.
The architecture firm Scapelab won the international competition for the design of the building in 2009 with the idea of completely renovating the structure, preserving only its historic shell and converting it into a multifunctional space for contemporary art.
Cukrarna, with its gigantic dimensions, represents a revolutionary space in Ljubljana’s cultural infrastructure.
It is a modern center for art and culture that attracts many visitors with its long-term programming of exhibitions and events.
All of this on the outskirts of the city center, revitalizing the previously abandoned urban area.
