When I first encountered this project, I was struck by its ability to connect urban mobility with millennia of history without rhetoric. A station that goes beyond moving people, transforming a daily journey into an experience of discovery, represents a rare opportunity for urban regeneration.
The new Line C station in Rome at Colosseo – Fori Imperiali strengthens metro connectivity and the efficiency of the urban network. Its spatial composition defines a place suspended between past and present: a large underground infrastructure that opens like a deep shaft, with light guiding the experience through the spaces.
The project merges the technical complexity of construction in an archaeological context of exceptional value with a narrative spatial approach. Restrained materials are set against calibrated luminous elements that reveal the finds and stories uncovered during excavation. Levels and internal paths form a continuous perceptual journey, enriching everyday transit with cultural meaning.
The designers move beyond the idea of a simple service container, shaping a place where infrastructure and urban memory meet, balancing functional efficiency and experiential quality. In a time of rising expectations for sustainability, inclusivity and accessibility, this station stands as a model for how transport architecture can enhance the prestige and liveability of a city.
The result is an intervention rooted in the material and visual culture of one of the world’s most admired capitals.
