Having been born in an area with a significant industrial history, I am quite familiar with these fascinating structures, especially when witnessing redevelopment projects. This is evident in the transformation of the “Wanmicang” warehouse, located on the south side of the Zhangjiang Cement Factory in Shanghai.
MAD Architects have unveiled the design for the space: the renovation includes a departure from the futuristic “floating” style, reminiscent of an ark, which rejuvenates the deteriorating industrial site by transforming the park into a multifunctional public space that integrates culture, creativity, commerce and shared offices.
The industrial heritage is not only preserved, but also utilized, not only for the historical memories it holds, but more importantly, to provide a sense of history for the future.
A newly designed bridge connects both sides of the river, allowing more people in the area to comfortably enjoy this new public space.
The redevelopment project is expected to be completed by 2026.
