Air Afrique, a pan-Africanist collective based in Paris, is preparing to launch its magazine during Paris Fashion Week in June.
The collective takes its name from a defunct West African airline and has obtained the rights to the archive of Balafon, the airline’s former in-flight publication.
They intend to use images from the archive in the revived magazine.
Bottega Veneta is supporting the magazine’s relaunch, which coincides with a growing trend of cultural partnerships in the luxury brand industry.
Until its demise in 2000, Air Afrique was widely regarded as a symbol of West African postcolonial independence and Pan-Africanism.
The magazine will be published in both English and French and will include interviews with West African cultural leaders, historical essays about the region, archival imagery, and editorial photoshoots.
Air Afrique expanded beyond its original role as an airline to serve as a cultural platform.
The collective’s mission is to preserve Air Afrique’s heritage, reintroduce it into cultural conversations, and build on its legacy of cultural engagement.
