Building something extreme in order to demonstrate something essential: this, in my view, is the type of projective idea most consistent with a genuinely future-oriented vision of innovation. It is not about performance for its own sake, nor visibility for its own sake, but the strategic use of a radical gesture to make a technology credible — one that struggles to be seen as viable outside the context in which it was developed. This logic, when well executed, turns a technical argument into a verifiable fact, and a verifiable fact into a market position.
The JCB Hydromax is a vehicle built to attempt the world land speed record for hydrogen internal combustion engine cars, with a declared target above 350 miles per hour. The car, nearly ten metres long, will run at Bonneville SpeedWeek in Utah in August, under FIA sanction. The current record for this category stands at 187.62 miles per hour. At the centre of the project are two hydrogen combustion engines developed by JCB — derived from the engine family used in its construction machinery, tuned to 800 hp each — driving all four wheels through a twin-transmission system. At the wheel will be Andy Green OBE, holder of the absolute land speed record at 763.035 miles per hour and the only human to have broken the sound barrier on land; he also drove the JCB Dieselmax in 2006. JCB has invested approximately a lot in this technology over five years — the same engines now shipping in its production machines. Putting them into a record car means making the potential of a propulsion system visible in a way no spec sheet can: in the electrification debate, hydrogen combustion struggles to receive the same attention as battery-based alternatives. The Bonneville attempt coincides with the opening of a new $500 million facility in San Antonio, Texas.
