In my ongoing exploration of hotels, today I want to focus on sustainability, which encompasses environmental, social and economic issues.
Several hotels are making concrete efforts to minimize their environmental impact and make a positive contribution.
Located on a rocky outcrop on a small island off the northeast coast of Newfoundland, Canada, the Fogo Island Inn was designed with sustainability in mind. It features a primary waste treatment facility and a solar panel heating system. Founded by Zita Cobb, an eighth-generation islander, this remote hotel aims to regenerate the lives of local people affected by overfishing by reinvesting all profits back into the community.
Each of its 29 unique guest rooms and suites overlooks the wildest and most powerful ocean on the planet.
