In the most compelling educational projects, space is not a backdrop, but an active part of learning. For me, innovation takes a concrete form: using architecture, movement and autonomy to reshape the relationship between children, community and knowledge, without turning design into a purely formal gesture.
Lab-École Saguenay, with the école primaire de l’Étincelle, proposes a reading of the school environment as a cultural device. The project, conceived by Agence Spatiale, Appareil Architecture and BGLA architecture + design urbain, originates from the intention to deconstruct the conventional image of the institution and translate it into a more reassuring, accessible and warm scale for children. Classrooms are organized into maisonnées, learning communities that foster exchange, group work and autonomy. Within this choice lies a clear element of innovation marketing: value is not communicated through a claim, but through a verifiable experience in which open pedagogy takes physical form. Learning extends beyond the classroom into shared spaces, the gradin, the mezzanine, the culinary workshop and common areas, making socialization and collaboration integral to the project. Daily movement also becomes content: students’ pathways, the escaliers, the cour en rez-de-jardin and even the walk from school transport support a physically active lifestyle. The vision is clear: not to impose behaviors, but to create conditions that enable them.
