I still clearly remember the moment when Dan Rubinstein told me he was going to launch a podcast about design, and much more. Since then, 12 seasons of “The Grand Tourist“ have been produced, and just a few days ago, in Milan during the Salone del Mobile, he gave me a preview of the first issue of the semi-annual print version of his magazine, which is now available for sale.
An impressive 364-page volume that explores the worlds of art, design, travel, and style, created with creative director Matthias Ernstberger and the podcast’s resident illustrator Zebedee Helm, featuring incredible original features that readers will find in this new deluxe hardcover volume.
The print magazine brings a collection of audio interviews to life with images created by “The Grand Tourist” team and collaborators from all over the world. The first issue includes stories from the entire current season of the podcast, including the duo behind the architectural studio Studio KO, artists and jewelry designers Sybil and David Yurman, Boeri, Ulrich Obrist, American architect Liz Diller, outgoing Yoox Net-a-Porter CEO Alison Leohnis, and designer Erdem Moralioglu, who appears on one of the three covers. Another cover is dedicated to designs by Molteni&C, while the other features high jewelry from Van Cleef & Arpels.
Rubinstein’s editorial approach and the quality of his publications are well known and widely appreciated, but what I personally find truly innovative is the creation of an ecosystem of activities built around the podcast and the magazine, based on high-quality standards and an incredibly streamlined operational structure — two principles that are now rare to find in today’s market.
