This is not the first time I have talked about the relocation of an activity, specifically a new museum that has found a home in the commercial podium of the tallest office building in Xinglin Bay, Jimei District, Xiamen.
The Red Dot Design Museum in Xiamen, designed by STEPS architecture, is the third outpost worldwide and the second in Asia. Unlike traditional museums, the Red Dot Design Museum mainly exhibits industrial design products that are closely related to people’s daily lives and naturally inspire us with their connection to consumer culture.
Utilizing the existing commercial storefronts as platforms for museum posters, the outdoor plaza and bridge are adorned with a series of red elements, including poster installations, painted columns and railings, alphabetically arranged seating, and a canopy, leading visitors to the museum entrance and infusing the city with dashes of vibrant red.
Andy Warhol once commented: “All shopping malls will become museums, and all museums will become shopping malls.”
