I often focus on those moments when a mature industry imports the logic of another to solve a problem that seemed unsolvable with its own tools. That is what happens when active safety, developed for decades in the automotive industry, is transferred onto a light vehicle designed for everyday urban mobility. It is not about increasing power or range, but about rethinking the relationship between whoever moves on two wheels and the traffic around them, turning a structural limitation into a design opportunity.
Volkswagen, in partnership with n+, has developed a range of e-bikes that transfers onto light mobility a safety system borrowed directly from the automotive world. The project’s most distinctive element is called Smart View: a high-definition camera mounted at the rear of the frame works together with a radar able to detect approaching vehicles, showing real-time footage on a screen integrated into the handlebars and flagging vehicles in the blind spot without the rider needing to turn around. Completing the system is an LED strip running along the top tube of the frame, conceived not merely as a running light but as a tool for communicating with surrounding traffic: it turns red under braking and flashes amber when turning, echoing the visual language typical of automotive tail lights. The ecosystem extends beyond the bicycle with a Bluetooth-connected helmet, able to synchronize its lights with those of the frame and to detect falls, automatically triggering a message to emergency contacts, and with smart glasses that project navigation cues and traffic alerts into the rider’s field of view. Rather than chasing performance, the initiative proposes a vision of light electric mobility built around awareness of the urban context, showing how mature technologies can generate real innovation when rethought for a use entirely different from their original one.
