Design is everywhere. It’s in products, services, and, in this case, schools. I was positively surprised by two things: first, the approach that the PearsonLloyd studio (winner of Designer of the Year 2023 by Dezeen) developed for the project, and second, the fact that design is increasingly permeating situations that have remained unchanged for decades.
The case in point: after two years of primary research on global pedagogy trends, CoLab is the outcome of the Senator project, aimed at exploring emerging models of higher education and changes in approaches to work for the new generations.
Pearson Lloyd identified the need for an informal, multi-modal, and multi-posture tech-enabled learning space.
By creating different relaxed and informal learning environments – creative hubs, quiet corners, social labs, team workspaces – the classroom extends beyond the conventional four sectorial walls, into the café, library, atrium, corridor, or common room to encourage students and teachers to engage in open discussions and collaborations after more conventional and formal teaching.
