When sport, services, retail, hospitality and public space are integrated into a single system, innovation becomes an organizational capability: a vision able to make what is often episodic part of everyday life.
Xinchang Globular Center, designed by Dr. Zhu Peidong together with the team at line+ studio, interprets sports architecture as an urban device rather than a container for isolated events. The complex rises in an area previously marked by fragmented industrial land, abandoned factories and poor pedestrian accessibility, transforming a marginal condition into a new civic destination. Its most relevant idea is the Sports Mall model, which combines sport, commerce, leisure and hospitality in order to overcome the low utilization typical of venues dedicated solely to competition. A central atrium functions as an internal street linking the main arena, small-ball sports halls, training facilities, retail areas and athlete hotel. Flexibility represents a second strategic element: an adaptive grid allows multiple configurations for badminton, basketball, tennis and table tennis, while the main arena includes 5,000 retractable seats. The continuous rooftop, open to the public with a football field, running track and viewing deck, extends the experience beyond the event calendar. The result is an infrastructure conceived to activate flows, permanence and recognizability, translating local sports culture into a platform for urban development.
