Thai design studio Onion has transformed the Refectory at King’s College International School Bangkok with a pastel blue palette. Unlike conventional dining halls used solely for lunchtime, this new space is designed to function throughout the school day, redefining the traditional canteen as a place for eating, studying, and socializing.
The open, flexible layout avoids rigid partitions, with two distinct zones subtly defined through materials and color. Inspired by the senior students’ uniforms, the calming light blue contrasts with the building’s warm orange brick, creating a relaxed atmosphere. Color and materiality softly divide the refectory’s spaces.
By blending thoughtful design with functionality, Onion has created a dynamic environment that encourages interaction and learning beyond mealtimes. The diverse seating options and open layout foster both small gatherings and larger group activities, supporting a vibrant and collaborative school community.
