Observing the recent architectural development in Pujiang, I was struck by how the project transforms a simple viewpoint into an immersive experience. I wanted to explore how vision and innovative materials can engage with the landscape, creating architecture that inspires both respect and a desire to discover.
The Pujiang Platform by MVRDV redefines the relationship between nature and built form. A curved timber pavilion, crowned with a green roof, integrates seamlessly with the hillside, echoing the natural contours while expanding the visual perspective. The use of timber is both aesthetic and strategic, reducing carbon emissions and offering a model of sustainable construction in a context not yet widely explored. Internally, the pavilion’s design leverages the natural slope to create flexible spaces, from a natural stage to an open panoramic area. The approach to circulation, with stepped paths and secondary platforms, reveals multiple viewpoints, encouraging a slow and considered exploration of the surroundings. Attention to light, natural ventilation, and thermal performance reflects a design rigor that elevates the visitor experience into a continuous dialogue between environment and architecture. In this project, MVRDV demonstrates how innovation, cultural sensitivity, and carefully selected materials can produce a work that is visually distinctive and a tangible example of responsible, refined architecture.
