I’m increasingly getting used to spotting examples of marketing innovation in the most unexpected contexts. Recently, I’ve shared stories about a cheese shop in Spain, a seaside bookstore in China, and even public announcement systems turned into artistic platforms. Today, I want to take you into an entirely different world: tattoos — where AI technology is transforming both the experience and perception of a deeply cultural practice.
The next frontier of body art: the Austin-based startup Blackdot has developed an AI-powered tattoo device that promises to make tattoos faster, safer, and significantly less painful than traditional methods.
The device does not generate designs autonomously: tattoo artists still create the artwork, while an operator guides the client through the process. The machine then executes the tattoo using digital microscopes, image-processing algorithms, and sensors that optimize needle depth based on skin type and tattoo location. This allows ink to be deposited precisely while avoiding most nerve endings, reducing pain dramatically (rated between 0/10 and 2/10, compared to the typical 5/10–8/10).
This breakthrough is the result of six years of research and development, conducted in collaboration with PhD candidates from Johns Hopkins University. Several of these devices are already in operation across the United States.
