In recent years, I’ve been closely observing the remarkable growth of the luxury sector in South Korea. Korean consumers are among the most active and sophisticated in the world, and this surge is also fueling innovation in the service economy. In dynamic environments like this, service providers have the opportunity to experiment, differentiate, and build authentic leadership based on uniqueness and added value.
A strong example of this trend is R.Lux, the digital luxury service launched in 2024 by Coupang, one of the world’s leading tech companies. Created to meet the needs of discerning consumers, R.Lux began in the beauty segment and is now expanding into fashion, thanks in part to a strategic partnership with Farfetch.
The app combines a refined, elegant user experience with Coupang’s logistical strength, offering guaranteed authenticity, premium packaging, and the convenience of Rocket Delivery — next-day fulfillment even outside major cities. This approach has successfully attracted a sophisticated, mostly female, and financially affluent customer base that values reliability, speed, and quality.
With over 20 million active users and a domestic market that, according to Morgan Stanley, ranks first globally in per capita spending on luxury goods, R.Lux has quickly positioned itself as a key player. The service was recognized with the 2025 iF Design Award for its outstanding user experience and aims to serve as a strategic partner for global luxury brands looking to enter or expand in the Asian market, offering direct access to a highly engaged audience.
Looking ahead, the project is focused on broadening its assortment, exploring new categories, and continuously elevating the shopping experience — with the ambition of making luxury more accessible, personalized, and seamless than ever before.
