At the MixC shopping mall in Qingdao, nestled between mountains and the Yellow Sea, a previously underutilized connection area has been transformed into a traffic magnet: the skatepark designed by Within Beyond Studio for the first and second phases of the Wanda Plaza complex is located outdoors at the top of the building.
Inspired by surfing, the design mimics the curve of a wave in the bowl, combining athletic performance with visual impact. This shape attracts the skate community and, above all, encourages visitors to stay longer, increasing the number of purchase touchpoints along the commercial pathway.
The rooftop transforms into a true contemporary agora: the skateboarding lines coexist with lounge areas, F&B corners, and brand events, creating a unified ecosystem that blends sport, socializing, and consumption.
Qingdao MixC demonstrates that when architecture is designed as an active experience, it becomes a lever to enhance mall activities and redefine the meeting point between leisure, retail, and entertainment.
