I had the opportunity to study the innovative capabilities of this project, which has no commercial purpose.
The SP80 project, led by a team of Swiss engineers and sailing enthusiasts, aims to break the world sailing speed record with a kite powered boat.
The Sailrocket’s V-shaped hull is almost as unconventional as the SP80’s thunderbird-like body. The latter, built by the Italian shipyard Persico Marine, measures 7 meters long and 6 meters wide and is made entirely of Carbon TPT, a material provided by the Swiss company North Thin Ply Technology.
The SP80 is a technology project dedicated to pure disruption and innovation, with no direct market opportunity.
However, by partnering with sailing stakeholders, research institutions and industrial companies, SP80 will stimulate scientific research and technology development.
This will lead to patent registration and licensing for future innovations in diverse applications such as energy production, maritime transportation and competitive sailing.
