Even though I grew up practically immersed in the world of fabrics, this news surprised me in a curious way. Loro Piana, a world leader in the production of cashmere fabrics for clothing, has recently launched a new fabric made from a blend of denim and silk, which is probably the most luxurious version of denim to date.
Called Denim Silk, the fabric is innovative and lightweight, with an authentic and unique touch, the result of a rare collaboration between selvage denim experts from the Bingo region of Japan and innovative artisans from Loro Piana in Piedmont, Italy.
The complexity of the process, which involves weaving fibers at a much slower rate than commercial denim production, means that it takes entire days to produce just 50 meters of fabric, the equivalent of about 25 pairs of jeans.
